2016 Auxiliary Support Awards 

  1. ARIZONA LAW ALLIANCE  $325:  Provided “Constitution Week” speakers and materials for grades K – 12 reaching 44 classes and 40 teachers in Gila Bend, Payson, Tucson, Buckeye, and Phoenix areas. The Alliance also launched a new program at the Arizona Supreme Court, which includes tours as well as Q and A sessions. 
  2. AUSTIN LAWYERS AUXILIARY – $300: Support for the expansion of veterans’ free legal advice clinics in Austin and seven surrounding Texas counties. The veterans are represented in such areas as family law, landlord/tenant relations, probate, bankruptcy and veterans’ benefits. 
  3. COLUMBUS BAR ASSOCIATION ALLIANCE – $300: Support for the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education, OWJL Summer Mock Trial Camp for gifted students, and the Law and Leadership Institute which provides “at-risk” high school students with academic programs in law, leadership, analytical thinking, problem-solving, writing skills and professionalism. 
  4. GRAND RAPIDS LAWYERS ALLIANCE – $300: Support of “We the People” programs at three high schools in the Grand Rapids area. The program promotes civic competence and responsibility and culminates in a competition where the students testify before a panel of attorneys, educators and civic leaders.
  5.  HOUSTON BAR ASSOCIATION AUXILIARY – $300: Support for the Leon Jawarski Award Program recognizing previous honorees of this prestigious award as well as the rededication of the “Family” sculpture in a ceremony on March 30, 2016 at the Juvenile Justice Center in Houston, Texas. 
  6. INDIAN RIVER COUNTY LAWYERS AUXILIARY – $325: Support for the “Dependency Court Project” which provides books, quiet toys, activity books, crayons, and white boards with dry erase markers to help occupy and ease the stress for the children seen in the Dependency Court. The Auxiliary instituted this program with guidelines from the Dependency Court judges and agencies involved with the Court. The judges and the bailiffs applaud the program, and it promotes a positive courtroom experience for the children. 
  7. INGHAM COUNTY BAR AUXILIARY – $325: Support for the Child Benefit Fund by distributing books to various agencies and assisting compromised families in the Michigan Capital City area. In addition, the ICBA has linked the Child Benefit Fund social workers with a group of artists who are creating a performance depicting human trafficking. This educational performance will be promoted to middle school students through young adults. 
  8. KALAMAZOO LAWYERS ALLIANCE – $300: Support for a new program to fund Constitutional Flash Cards for fifth graders in Kalamazoo County. The program coordinates with the fifth grade Social Studies curriculum and promotes a better understanding of the Constitution at the fifth grade level. The program will also tie in with the Presidential election in 2016. 
  9. MICHIGAN LAWYERS ALLIANCE – $300: A new project entitled “Quiz Cards for Teachers”. The goal for the MLA is to distribute quiz cards to 6th,7th, and 8th grade teachers in 80 Michigan public schools. Sixth grade teachers will receive “The US Constitution Quiz Deck”. If funding allows, the seventh grade teachers will receive “The American Revolutionary War Quiz deck”, and the eighth grade teachers will receive “The Words We Live By Quiz Deck”. 
  10. NATIONAL CAPITAL LAWYERS AUXILIARY – $300: For continuing their sponsorship of the Law Day Essay contest, which is in its 40th year. The contest is open to 5th and 6th grade students in Washington D.C public schools and is based on the general theme “What America Means to Me”. Justice Sotomayor serves as the sponsor and keynote speaker at the awards ceremony held at the U. S. Supreme Court. Approximately 20 winning essays are chosen, and each winner receives a cash award and a signed copy of Justice Sotomayor’s book ” My Beloved World“. 
  11. SAGINAW COUNTY LAWYERS AUXILIARY – $325: Support for a new project, which provides book distribution to in, need children in Saginaw County. The auxiliary members will help in both the collection as well as distribution of the books through coordinated efforts with various agencies and organizations in Saginaw County. 
  12. SAN ANTONIO BAR AUXILIARY – $300: Support for scholarships for a second year law student at St. Mary’s Law School and a paralegal student at Bexar County Community College. In addition, funding is provided for the printing and postage of invitations for a fund raising event to raise money for the scholarship fund and raise awareness/promote the San Antonio Bar Auxiliary. 
  13. WICHITA BAR ASSOCIATION AUXILIARY – $325: Street Outreach is an arm of the Wichita Children’s Home. One night a month the WBAA provides a hot nourishing meal at a common gathering place for older teenagers, young moms, infants and toddlers. In addition, the WBAA supports CASA of Sedgwick Co. which provides trained volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children.
